Quality of handwriting is related primarily to fine motor skills. It appears that crawling is valuable for hand/arm/shoulder development that supports good handwriting.

Is he seeking attention that is gained by 1)his shy reaction, 2)acting out behavior, 3)surprising transformation? Perhaps using the preparation strategy, rehearse his "big role" in greeting the guests in some fashion that will give him positive attention he may be seeking.
