comment When is physical punishment appropriate?
No it is not a null argument. Yes, spanking change the outcome. That's the whole point. Not when it comes to respect, but other things. Physical punishment is bad for your kids. Have you even read any of the other answers here? The whole point is that physical punishment makes your kids aggressive and disobedient. In fact, it doesn't teach respect, it teaches fear, which is often thought to be the same thing but is quite opposite.

I have a lot of respect for everyone, kids, adults, authority figures or not, until they prove that they don't deserve it. Bang goes that theory.

It's true that confirmation bias is a problem with both sides of the argument when talking about anecdotal evidence. That's why science doesn't rely on anecdotal evidence. Actual research shows clearly that physical punishment doesn't help, if anything it makes it worse. It gives kids less respect for adults, more prone to violence and aggression, and increases behavioral problems.

comment Are same-gender classrooms better for girls, or mixed-gender classrooms better for boys?
And "ratio"? Wouldn't "mixed vs same-gender education" be a better title? It's not like 35% girls is gonna make a difference vs 45% girls. :)

comment Are same-gender classrooms better for girls, or mixed-gender classrooms better for boys?
Boys in same-sex settings do not feel the need for aggressive and showy behavior to impress girls, and girls do not feel the need to behave cute and stupid. That's why in some cases both genders do better. Single-gender classes is a bad idea for other reasons though, it's better to have one class and sometimes split it. However I can't find the research that is the source for these statements, so it's not an answer but a comment.

comment How can I stop my toddler from playing with electrical outlets and plugs?
@torbeng: I didn't even look at the outlets in our apartment when we rented it. Then it turned out they didn't use safe outlets. Apparently that's not required in Poland. Crazy stuff. I noticed before my daughter started crawling though, so it's fine now. :)

I think that's hard with many plug types. In US you need covers: google.com/…

comment How old is old enough for a child to have their ears pierced?
+1 I think you if anything sound too "light". :) Let's repeat it: Piercing a childs ears without their consent is a violation of their rights. I'm surprised at the question, even. :)

comment When do kids usually stop believing in Santa Claus?
A trusted source told her the Tooth Fairy exists, but never claimed the same about Santa. As a result she believes in the Tooth Fairy but not Santa. That's perfectly logical, and you would do the same. Lack of logic only comes into it if they continue to believe something despite being proved wrong. And kids don't do that. Only adults do. :)

3-7 seconds is not holding your breath. That almost sounds like the opposite: Hyperventilating.

comment Does anyone recognize where the phrase “Dinosaur on the button” comes from?
According to google, it comes from you! :) He may in fact have made it up himself, or it's a distortion of something he heard, so it's hard to find because it wasn't a dinosaur or a button.
