comment Is my son deaf?
Not talking at 9 years isn't an issue of 'late talking' but something much different. You need to seek professional opinions on this. We can't answer this question for you.

comment Why does my 16-year-old hate me?
@KaiQing My point that if it is ODD, which it seems we potentially agree on as being a strong possibility, leading medical advice (the mayo clinic) is to seek therapy.

comment Why does my 16-year-old hate me?
@JustinOhms 'textbook' ODD could include real mental health issues. Being patient is important but simply stating 'it will work out' isn't the best advice, IMHO. It's been 4 years. Time to find out if there's more to this. The Mayo Clinic's overview of ODD (TL/DR: seek therapy): mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/…

@reed why would you say that?

comment What can be done when a child cuts his or her hair?
@Erik my point being that you can't stop a kid with scissors from cutting their hair. If they want to do it, they will do it.

comment How can I make my kids passionate in science while being religious?
I think the premise of the question is flawed in that it seems to imply that it's not something that is typically done or is easy to do. It's like asking how to make your kids passionate about sports and science. They are just two different things that they can be exposed to and may or may not find they have a passion for.

comment How can we help our son deal with his girlfriend's emotional issues?
Teenage boy is constantly on phone/skype with girlfriend? Doesn't see his friends anymore? This seems like perfectly typical teenage behavior.

How was this the chosen answer? It's a terrible answer.

comment I want to expose my 5-year-old daughter to boys and girls toys equally, but she just turned her nose up at Star Wars. What do I do?
@CreationEdge it all comes down to the adults that are influencing them, I guess. :)

@CreationEdge I'd argue that what looks like boy vs. girls toys is purely an adult concept. Kids don't care. We mostly agree, we're just coming at it from slightly different perspectives.

@CreationEdge There's a huge difference between 'not worrying' and 'passivity'. Actively expose your children to all, but don't worry one way or the other. Kids will be exposed to cultural forces regardless. Insisting that there are boy vs. girl toys will only emphasize that. You don't need to teach a child which toys to play with. They will choose themselves without any teaching on your part. Actively insisting a boy to play with a doll or a girl to play with a dump truck would be what will emphasize those cultural biases.

comment 11 year old son searching for porn
@CreationEdge I can't say I've ever seen any legal case of child abuse stemming from a kid hunting out porn. Granted, it all depends on context and jurisdiction but I don't think the blanket statement "mom and dad can get in trouble if you do this" is at all a sincere thing to say to the child.

@CreationEdge this is parenting.se. We parents have no time for that. :) (I kid, you make a very good point...please feel free to add your citations to the answer if you'd like).

@CreationEdge yep, but that would have nothing to do with a teenage boy surfing the web.

Not everyone would agree about the 'wrongness' of porn. There are concerns with it, of course. Also, I don't see how you'd be in trouble. Kids watch porn. Always have. Always will. Like with a lot of vices in life, you may want to take an approach of educating rather than scaring.

comment I don't want to be a father
I think it's more important that a child's parents are happy and well adjusted than it is that they are together with each other. That doesn't mean one shouldn't try to make the relationship work, but they shouldn't also assume that is the one way to get through this.

"I however have never been more miserably unhappy" = there's your answer right there.

comment Is organic whole cow's milk better than “toddler milk” powder for a 1 year old?
Note that in many countries, the dairy industry also has a large lobbying interest as well. I'd have your doctor make the call rather than your poli-sci friends. :)

comment Consequences of smoking marijuana during pregnancy (especially first weeks)?
@barbecue the only bit in that law that could be seen as a possible hole is the child abuse section. However, HIPAA violations are taken with huge seriousness in hospitals and clinics. Any Doctor deciding to report for any of those issues is risking serious reprimands from their employer. So while one could argue there's a chance in this particular situation, it's slim and I believe more hypothetical in most places.
