If your kid spends a lot of her/his time just behind computer, using Internet its enough to be worried. But at least, you may think, they're not hanging out with some hooligans or boozing with friends under the city bridge. In fact there are many bad things can happen to kid, without someone visiting them or without them leaving the house.

My question considers adolescents, so let's assume just seeing a bit of nudity/violence or getting scared would not be devastating to them. I rather mean some longer processes, like a continuous on-line acquaintance with improper people, or something like that. Can you give some other examples of such dangers?

I'm sorry that my question is not fully in Q&A style, but I think I can get many concrete, interesting and useful answers.

I'm afraid that questions that ask for an open-ended list of answers has long been deemed to a poor fit for our platform. Please see our faq for guidelines on what is an appropriate scope for questions. If you can think of a way to rephrase this to focus on a specific problem or situation, we can see about reopening it. It's just too open-ended as phrased now, though. – Beofett Feb 3 at 17:15

Myself I could think of:

  • addiction to pornography - things can go much worse than just being curious and watching some videos, like any addiction it can be very devastating to the kid and also affect their future intimate relations (for example giving some unrealistic views on how woman body usually looks like).

  • procrastination - Internet can be very useful when doing homework, there are many good materials if a teacher didn't explain the subject properly, but if kid is constantly distracted for example by IMS, it can be hard for them to concentrate and they can even develop procrastination

  • pro-ana movement - there are self-support forums created by girls who don't want to get cured from anorexia or wish to develop such condition (they say they don't, but they do all to get it, they're really messed up), I registered on such a forum for my studies project and it was really scary (of course I didn't write anything there because I'm not a psychiatrist and I didn't want to make things worse).

  • cults - I'm not sure you can be involved in cult just by using Internet but maybe you have some remarks on this topic?

  • massive involvement in conspirational theories - I'm not sure if this is really dangerous, maybe it can make a kid view the world as very hostile? Again, maybe you have some remarks on this issue?
